Email

During your stay in Geneva, you can read your mail on the computers in the Central Library at CERN. There are 6 PC's and 10 X-terminals.

For those with their own laptop computer, free network access can be obtained whilst at CERN by registering the laptop before arrival using the instructions below.

From the CERN Library there are several options for reading your email - you can use any available protocol for accessing your own mailbox, e.g. http, Telnet, SSH, FTP, etc.

A temporary username and password will be included in your welcome pack and will allow participants to use the Library's machines.

Laptops

In order to connect a laptop to the network at CERN you should register as a visitor in advance (when you are asked for a contact person at CERN you can enter the details of: Tullio Basaglia, Group SI, Department DSU).

Wireless network is available in some areas. It is available in the Hostel (only in Hostel building number 39), in the Main Auditorium and its surrounding area, in the Library and in most conference rooms. Network sockets are available in some public areas including the Library.

Note that Swiss power sockets are three pin but will accept standard European two pin plugs, however, the sockets are recessed (hexagonal) so some adaptors may not be suitable. See a picture of a European to Swiss adaptor. A small number of European-Swiss adaptors will be available to borrow from Susanne Schaefer (contact on mobile telephone: 72431 from inside CERN).
